Meet Sonu

I work mainly with acrylic paint on canvas, metal and reclaimed wood. Vibrant sea life, beachy days, tropical flora, views from the deep, and the tangles of tattoo inspired graphic art are some themes in my work.

My Story

Growing up on the coast in British Columbia, I was that small slightly nerdy kid who didn’t quite fit in. A melting pot of culture, Vancouver was a great place to become inspired by the tapestry of cultural stories and visual arts. I spent hours in bookshops, libraries, and local galleries soaking in the works of the masters and modern artists. Fascinated with Art History and development of different movements, my nose was always in a book. I dabbled in acrylic painting and for me it was a welcome “play” time to see what I could create. I was fortunate to have a number of teachers and creative influencers that nurtured my love of art along the way. Though my passion for painting started at a young age, it was only becoming a mom and moving to Antigua when I truly found myself as an artist.

Artist Statement

Living in a beautiful island like Antigua, I focus on life and movement in my creations. Stunning sunsets, whimsical fish, playful turtles, stoic octopus, and colorful jellyfish are all brought to life with my palette of bold, bright, and harmonious colors. My distinctive personal style is playful and fun in hopes to evoke emotion, and communicate joy in each piece.

About My Work

I have had the pleasure of working on many commissioned works, and I enjoy bringing visions to life in my style. A rewarding and creative endeavor, each commissioned work has personal meaning and authenticity for myself and the patron.

My work has been featured in solo and collaborative exhibitions on the island and can also be found on labels and merchandise designed for select products and businesses in Antigua. When not painting, I am immersed in the work of craft distilling (at Antilles Stillhouse), or making sand sculptures on the beach with my inspiration, my daughter.
